Competition-based potentials in paratriathlon - an explorative approachIntroduction
On the occasion of the paralympic debut in Rio de Janeiro 2016, the reorganization of the ITU classification code in 2014 and the current lack of scientific knowledge, there was sufficient cause for investigation of paratriathlon competitions. The aim of the study was to analyse and distinguish potentials
in paratriathlon in order to provide recommendations for sponsorship, training, material, and science.
Method
The data basis consisted of 30 ITU World Paratriathlon Events (WPE) and 6 ETU European Championships (ECSs) from 2007 to 2015. The analysis considered the amount of finishers (n), the percentage of home athletes, the development of the winning time. Additionally the relative difference between the winner’s time (WT) and the best possible time (BPT) was calculated for the Grand Final in Edmonton 2014. The BPT was calculated by the sum of the fastest time in every sub discipline within the respective sport class.
Results
The percentage of home athletes was generally higher in events far away from Europe. The development of winning time revealed a high variability in female athletes, whereas the men seemed to be more homogeneous between sport classes. For both genders, no obvious trend was found. The WT-BPT-differences ranged from 0,5% to 5,8%, with a mean of 3,14% in paratriathletes. Accept the PT 2, the females had lower WT-BPT-differences then males. Compared to the elite of ablebodied athletes (females 1,3%; males 2%), the values of paratriathletes seemed to be slightly higher.
Discussion
The results indicated several potentials in paratriathlon and can be seen as groundbreaking in an untouched field of study. The potentials vary by sport class, gender and discipline, which emphasizes the demand of individual coaching. Most notably, paratriathletes should be sponsored, trained, treated, and coached as able-bodied athletes. The success of the Great Britain Team - currently 15 athletes in the top ten ranking (20th of April 2015) – supports this approach.
