Forschungsziel
The career development of youth athletes in Paralympic sport is an under-researched yet critical area within sport science, particularly given the unique challenges faced by this population. This study aims to explore the individual, social, and structural factors that impact the career trajectories of elite para athletes during the youth phase.
Employing a qualitative longitudinal research design, the study will follow ten para athletes aged 15 to 18 years over a ten-month period, utilizing in-depth interviews, background questionnaires, and biographical mapping to capture their lived experiences and identify key turning points in their careers. The methodology is rooted in a social constructivist approach, applying Hodkinson and Sparkes' Careership Theory to analyse the athletes' career development within the broader context of adolescence and disability. Next to a cross case comparison, the study's data will be analysed through thematic analysis, providing insights into the interrelationship between personal development, athletic performance, and societal factors.
The study is expected to contribute significantly to the field of sport science by offering new theoretical and practical insights into the development of tailored support systems for youth para athletes. The findings will help to inform future policies and practices aimed at promoting sustainable and successful career pathways for young athletes with disabilities. This research will also enhance the visibility of parasport within academic and applied contexts, contributing to the broader goals of inclusivity and equality in sports.
