Studying executive functions in real-world scenarios using virtual reality applications - A focus on inhibitory control

This proposal aims to develop and test virtual reality based scenarios that use head-mounted displays to study aspects of executive functioning during mobility-related activities of older persons. For this purpose, pilot studies in young and old subjects will be performed. The proposed activities extend ongoing studies at the Institute of Movement and Sport Gerontology investigating the impact of inhibitory control on the performance of balance and mobility-related tasks and are essential preparatory steps for designing well-controlled novel studies that increase our understanding of the impact of age-related changes in executive functions on mobility.
