Abstract
Abstract: In many cases, back therapies provide temporary relief for patients suffering from acute back pain. However, owing to the strong tendency towards recurrence and thus the tendency towards chronicity, back pain patients need to adopt long-term behavior conducive to good back health in order to reduce the occurrence of chronic back pain. Therefore, self-responsible action, meaning the individual patient¢s own activity, is of particular importance. The starting point of the present study is the effect of psychological measures placing the emphasis on the patient making a resolution. The study examined their influence on behavior conducive to good back health, the subjective state of health, body awareness, body concept, self-awareness and self-control of participants of various forms of therapies for back pain. After the 10-week program and a follow-up interview after another 16 weeks, a trend was seen for patients in the test group to show improvements in terms of behavior conducive to good back health when compared with the control group. Further improvements were found with respect to the characteristics of self control with a beneficial effect on back health. Apart from the intervention measures, it was also the type of institution where the participants had been solicited (Volkshochschule (public education center similar to a community college), fitness studio, physiotherapy clinic) that had a number of effects.
