Augmented Feedback for Movement Error Correction in Gymnastics

Augmented feedback is a relevant part of the coaching process in gymnastics and consequently has an important influence on motor skill performance. This chapter examines the feedback behavior patterns of gymnastic coaches as well as the effects of coaches’ experience level, skill level, and the age of the athletes on coaches’ feedback behavior. The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast the feedback behavior of expert gymnastic coaches and less experienced coaches, as well as different feedback patterns relevant to the experience level of the gymnasts. A questionnaire was developed and completed by German gymnastics coaches. Results indicate that the main factor influencing coaches’ feedback is the skill level of the gymnasts. Furthermore, the level of coaches’ license positively correlated with the level of the gymnasts. In conclusion, coaching strategies should be modified in order to provide optimal feedback at the beginning of the athlete’s career.
