    Abstract

Authors showed the applicability of the regulatory focus theory from Higgins 1997 to the area of sports. Thereby they demonstrated how sport psychology can benefit from using current social psychological theories to predict and improve performance. Furthermore, the area of sports provides a natural testing ground in which theories that are otherwise restricted to the laboratory can be explored. In the best case, this leads to new recommendations in the applied field and new insights into well-established theories. Conclusions
