N2 - In higher education, nurturing creativity holds immense significance as it is central to students’ capabilities of adapting to the rapidly changing social and economic demands of today’s society. Study program coordinators seem to agree that schools and universities need to be redesigned in order to promote creativity and educate for innovation. While numerous studies have indicated that creativity can be developed in and through sports, for decades, researchers mainly addressed the field of creativity by employing sport-related interventions to modify or boost supposedly cognitive aspects of creativity (e.g., cognitive inhibition or divergent thinking), hereby underestimating the importance of the body as a resource for creative performance. This thesis specifically examined the influence of learning environments on students’ creativity development, exemplified by two distinct conditions: a divergent-oriented study program (DOSP) and a convergent-oriented study program (COSP) in sports science. The influences of both learning envi-ronments on students’ motor and figural creativity were analyzed during a two-and-a-half-year study period. A total of 33 COSP students and 31 DOSP students underwent com-prehensive creativity assessments at the beginning and end of their sports studies. Motor creativity was evaluated using a modified version of the BAST® movement analysis, while figural creativity was assessed using the TTCT. Although both groups started with similar motor and figural creativity levels, by the end of their studies, DOSP students outperformed COSP students in various measures of motor creativity, including fluency, elaboration, and originality. Additionally, DOSP students exhibited significant improvements in aspects of figural creativity compared to COSP students. The results suggest that learning environments built around diversification and that support divergent thinking positively affect students’ creativity development. These conditions, furthermore, affect executive functions by providing inhibitory strategies that allow DOSP students to enhance certain aspects of creativity (e.g., fluidity). During their study period, DOSP students also developed a more accurate movement self-perception, which is not only a fundamental requirement for achieving advanced levels of expertise in sports but also plays a significant role in enhancing creativity among sports students. DOSP students’ superior performance is routed in the range of movement repertoire they acquire during their studies and strategies that allow them to translate these new bodily experiences into creative expressions in different domains (e.g., figural). These findings, furthermore, support the idea of a supramodal basis of creativity for motor and figural creativity.
