Abstract

MentalEmpowerment, the network initiative for mental health in elite sports, was founded in 2011 and established at the German Sport University Cologne. This article describes the development and the working fields of the initiative and emphasizes the necessity of cooperation between different professions for the benefit of the athletes. Although elite sport can contribute in a positive way to personality development, athletes are not immune to psychological problems and illnesses. The prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders is similar to that in the general population, while athletes even are at a higher risk of eating disorders. For 9 years, MentalEmpowerment has been working on improving athletes' and trainers' mental health situation in the fields of Counselling and Mediation, Information and Public Relations, Further Education and Events, and Early Detection and Screening and has been training multipliers, for example, sport psychologists in the field of Mental Health in Elite Sports.
