Abstract
Sport has been pointed out as an important contributor to sustainable
development. Accordingly, policies for sustainable development in and through
sports have been developed both internationally and nationally. In Sweden, the
national governing body of sport launched its sustainable development policy in
2021. While sustainable development policy work is developing, research
recognises various challenges, namely, unclearness in policy content, and lack
of implementation structures. Further, a comprehensive mapping of ongoing
policy work on a national level is rare. Addressing this gap in this research, the
aim of this was to explore Swedish sports organisations’ policy work towards
sustainable development. Applying an adapted policy integration assessment
framework, a qualitative document analysis with reflexive thematic analysis
was conducted. Out of 73 Swedish sports organisations analysed, only 12
organisations had established documents related to sustainable development.
Out of these, just four had explicit sustainable development policy documents.
Content-wise, the 12 analysed Swedish sports organisations conceptualised
sustainable development as multidimensional. Aspects of social, ecological, and
economical sustainable development were considered, along with different
Sustainable Development Goals. The choice of these aspects mainly grounded
the sports organisations’ central objectives. However, explicit actions to reach
the set objectives, especially regarding the Sustainable Development Goals
were lacking. Therefore, a key policy priority should be that Swedish sports
organisations ensure alignment between goals and actions, as well as
implementation work. To support this process, research on the practices of
sustainable development work in Swedish sports organisations is needed.
