Abstract
Paradoxical performance describes the occurrence of a significant lower performance than expected. A performance detrimental phenomenon is the yips, which is characterized as involuntary movements during the execution of a fine motor skill. The yips is reported to be multi-etiological including neurological and psychological contributions. As a psychological phenomenon, it is seen as a chronic and severe form of choking under pressure or as a conditioned response.
In the lecture, we will focus on the phenomenology of the yips in different sports, different psychological aspects of the yips, the way to diagnose it, and suggestions about its treatment.
