Abstract

For-profit organizations have entered markets which have traditionally been served by non-profits, thus increasing the competitive pressure on nonprofit organizations. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects that competition from for-profits has on the organizational structures of nonprofit organizations, more explicitly on their objectives, financial resources, and human resources. The effects are estimated based on data from the Sport Development Report 2015/2016, a nationwide longitudinal online survey of nonprofit sports clubs in Germany. Data were analyzed using propensity score matching on a sample of n=5,350, respectively n=4,394 clubs. Results show that nonprofit sports clubs in competition strategically differentiate by focusing more on social objectives and high-performance sports. Moreover, clubs in competition employ more paid staff in management, coaching and referee positions.
