Description

Workshop EASM Konferenz 2016: Corporate Social Responsibility and Sport: Reviewing and Shifting the Field

Over the last decade, research into corporate/social responsibility (CSR/SR), sustainability and governance in sport has created a fundamental, mostly descriptive body of sport management literature.
Academia, industry, civic groups, and policy-makers are increasingly recognising the significance of social responsibility in and through sport. The scholarly potential for sport management researchers lies in analysing current activities and leading ways forward – especially based on deeper theoretical anchoring and reflections on the dynamic developments of the topic and its application over the last decade.
More recently, and based on a wider review of the field, Breitbarth, Walzel, Anagnostopoulos and van Eekeren (in 2015) have outlined areas of both need and opportunity for CSR and sport to substantialise: e.g. contextually embedded and longitudinal research of SR in sport is still in its infancy as are insights into organisational decision-making processes, organisational capacity to respond to social pressures, the role of individuals as social innovation agents and entrepreneurs, and consequences of social responsibility for organisational cultures and the integrity of sport.
Generally, the workshop extends, updates and inspires the debate around CSR in and through sport following the successful workshops in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Specifically, the workshop will focus on reviewing the field of the CSR and sport research (including, possibly, practice). The value of jointly reviewing a field is that it allows to step aside from individual studies and encourages bigger picture thinking. It can lead to new horizons and new narratives for one’s own research and, more importantly, may lead to ‘shift’ a research field.
