Project details
Research objective
Ruhpolding is the epitome of biathlon. The small Bavarian community has achieved a significant reputation within the sport of biathlon. The Biathlon World Championships, which took place between 29 February and 11 March 2012, served to perpetuate this tradition. The event was the inaugural World Championships to explicitly prioritize sustainability in its planning and operations. The Organising Committee of the IBU World Championships Biathlon 2012 in Ruhpolding and the Foundation for Safety in Skiing (SIS) have entered into a collaborative endeavour with the Advisory Board for Environment and Skiing Development of the German Ski Association (DSV) with the objective of ensuring the sustainable implementation of biathlon events. The Institute for Outdoor Sport and Environmental Research was responsible for the scientific monitoring and development of the sustainability concept. The event is comprehensively documented in this sustainability report, the Green Legacy Report. Since 2012, essential elements in the fields of action have been updated and further developed at the annual World Cup events in the Chiemgau Arena.
