Hippotherapy for MS

Project details

Research objective

This work proposes research in a major area of sports science—movement behavior science—and application of findings to help improve the lives of people who are living with multiple sclerosis. Firstly, the Movement Analysis Scales and Test (i.e., BAST), a standardized test of movement behavior developed by Professor Dr. Hedda Lausberg at the German Sport University Cologne, will be investigated as an objective tool for measuring MS fatigue. Secondly, the BAST will be investigated for its ability to measure changes in MS fatigue accompanying therapeutic intervention. Here, persons with MS are monitored via BAST sessions whilst participating in hippotherapy (i.e., the therapeutic use of horseback riding); additionally, the BAST will be used to quantify changes in gait, balance and coordination that accompany hippotherapy.
