Mountain biking has emerged as a significant contributor to the tourism industry in the Black Forest region. In recent years, a network of over 8,000 km of mountain bike trails has been constructed within the nature park area. Nevertheless, the planning of the routes did not take into account all relevant MTB target groups. The absence of dedicated mountain bike trails has led to an increase in the use of hiking trails by MTB riders. In order to mitigate the potential for conflict between the various user groups and to develop the existing mountain bike (MTB) infrastructure in a target group-oriented and high-quality manner, the Institute for Nature Sports and Ecology at the German Sport University Cologne, in collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg Forestry Administration and the Southern Black Forest and Central/Northern Black Forest Nature Parks, has produced a new edition of the mountain bike handbook. The guide assists those responsible for strategic adaptation of tourism offers in making well-informed decisions that take into account the demands and needs of stakeholders from a range of sectors, including forestry, tourism, sport, nature conservation and hiking associations.
The guideline describes in detail the processes from rough planning to the operation of MTB trails. Legal principles are also listed in the guide. In addition, various checklists provide an overview of the planning process
