Abstract

Current national and international studies emphasise the lack of physical activity among children and young people in Germany, which has demonstrably detrimental effects on their development, health and well-being. Both classroom and extracurricular physical activity programmes provide opportunities in the school setting to reach the majority of children and motivate them to be more active or to participate in lifelong sport.
The aim of this study is to investigate the need for physical activity promotion after a socially challenging time, the Covid-19 pandemic, and in a previously unattended setting, the secondary school. In addition, effective factors for promoting physical activity in late childhood were to be identified and considered and implemented as part of a project. The first article analyses the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on the sport motor performance and BMI of children in second grade. The influences have been discussed in different ways so far, but it became clear that children with a low socio-economic status in particular would benefit from physical activity promotion, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, including at secondary schools. In the second article, the current scientific situation on the promotion of physical activity in the secondary school setting was analysed. In a scoping review, only six studies were identified that were characterised by heterogeneous study designs. Specific components for effective physical activity promotion, such as the minimum duration and organisational form, could be derived from the studies for future projects on physical activity promotion in secondary schools. The third article describes the relationship between physical activity, sport motor performance and physical activity motivation in children at secondary schools and assesses physical activity motivation as an influencing factor on sport motor performance and physical activity. The theoretically assumed chain of effects in the three areas of promotion of basic needs, satisfaction of basic needs and motivational orientation were confirmed for late
childhood. Further analyses highlight the impact of self-determined motivation for physical activity on physical activity and sport motor performance. The fourth article focusses on the implementation of physical activity promotion at secondary schools and in this context highlights the process and result quality after the first project run. Self-determined motivation for physical activity can be achieved by satisfying basic needs through peer mentoring and other components, and subjectively perceived physical activity can be increased.
This work is the starting point for multiple further research activities to design motivating physical activity promotion in the secondary school setting
