    Abstract

Performing tennis at competitive level in childhood or adolescence is linked to high physical loads, especially considering that tennis belongs to the sports diciplines with an asymmetric demands. It is known that adolescents engaged in such sport may be prone to developing a femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI). Assuming that muscular asymmetries may be of etiological importance, the muscles of adolescent competitive tennis players with or without clinically and radiologically diagnosed FAI (among other functional examinations) were studied volumetrically by means of consecutive MRI slices ranging proximally from L1 to distally the end of the linea aspera femoris. Although more or less pronounced asymmetries were found for some muscles, the results do not favour the idea of a muscular cause for the development of FAI. Since, however, the amount of training load appears to promote FAI, special means of corrective exercises are recommended for young competitive athletes.
