Abstract
The impact on open green spaces in the urban environment has increased during the last years. Besides a total loss of open space the intention of use has changed. Active forms of outdoor recreation are requested stronger than passive forms. Actual strategies of urban planning do not deal with this change in behaviour. As a result there is a lack of applied methods for a sustainable development of urban green spaces regarding to sport and active outdoor recreation. The basis for such a strategy is the attitude of users. Regarding to the questions
1. Which attitudes do user have when practicing nature-based recreation activities?
2. Can the attitudes be summarized in a general modelled?
3. What are the consequences for planning nature-based activities in an urban environment?
the attitudes were ascertained and merged in a model. Regarding to the research questions the method of visitor employed photography was used during the research process, because it was possible to identify the mental representation of open spaces with this qualitative strategy. In the end it was possible to identify four vertices which must be recognized when planning an urban green space for active recreation. These are “nature and landscape”, “infrastructure”, “conflicts” and “maintenance”.
