Abstract

Introduction For the target group of seniors, virtual reality (VR) applications can be supportive by promoting cognitive and motor skills and can have positive effects on activities of daily living (ADLs). VR can contribute to an increase in quality of life and be seen as a contribution to healthy aging in a target group-oriented application de-velopment. Crucial for this is a user-oriented VR development that integrates the needs of seniors and considers them in a participatory process.
The aim of the research project is to develop a set of quality criteria for senior-friendly VR applications that includes criteria for senior-friendly VR application development.
Methodology In a multi-stage, qualitative study design, quality criteria for VR appli-cations suitable for seniors are successively developed through literature research, framework analysis and workshops with experts and users. Based on a continuous systematization process, categories and criteria are generated and reviewed. The re-sults derived from the qualitative research methods are tested for validity in a practical transfer by developing the VR application Wegfest.
Results The findings obtained in a four-stage process represent different versions of the quality criteria core set. After the transfer into practice by Wegfest, the finalized core set of quality criteria represents the result of this research work. The first chapter includes criteria from the categories 1. quality assurance of medical/health content, 2. data protection provisions, 3. quality requirements, 4. consumer protection and 5. interoperability. The second chapter includes the following categories: 1. graphic/ quality, 2. 3D character/ avatar, 3. providing application-integrated instruc-tions and prompts, 4. interaction, 5. navigation, and 6. promotion of user motivation and loyalty to use.
Discussion The finalized core set of quality criteria is evaluated as the basis for sen-ior-friendly VR application development. Due to the continuous development of VR and the heterogeneous requirements of the target group of seniors, the quality criteria need to be specified with regard to the context of use and the user (groups).
