Abstract
Sports offer numerous positive opportunities for adolescents, but due to its inherent sport-specific structures, it also provides risks that can encourage the practice and concealment of interpersonal and sexual violence. In recent years, both sport organisations and sport policy have made important progress in the
prevention of violence in sports, especially in terms of sexual violence against children. The article provides an overview of empirical findings on the prevalence and types of violence in sport and discusses the specific risks and social structures in sports that can promote and conceal the practice of violence. Finally, the development of sports policy in the areas of prevention, intervention and inquiry in organised sport is described in order to provide indications for the improvement of structures for protection against violence.
