Comparison of a 3D dynamic office chair with a conventional 2D dynamic office chair: Impact upon local muscle metabolism, range of motion and physical activity

To give the back sufficient stimuli and keep it fully functional, able and healthy, the back has to be able to move physiological while sitting for long periods.
This German research project combines human physiology with an office chair providing a three-dimensional range of motion.
The test subjects’ movements on the two chairs were examined using an optical infra-red camera system. A surface pressure system analysed pressure distribution on both chairs. Oxygen saturation of the test subjects back muscles was investigated with a new oximeter system. This system uses near-infrared technology (NIRS) for mobile real-time measurement and thus allows capturing data related to local metabolic reactions. Furthermore, a questionnaire was designed to evaluate stability, comfort, sense of muscular activation, and freedom of movement.
The movement analysis shows that test subjects were able to use physiological three-dimensional movements while doing office work sitting at a desk. Through the chair’s multi-joint construction, it provides a significantly larger range of movement than conventional chairs. Muscle oxygen saturation shows promising results regarding local metabolism of back muscles. Subjects noted an activation effect in the back. With frequent use, this will counteract the monotonous sitting at work.
