Prof. Dr. Claudia Steinberg (née Behrens) is the head of the Institute of Dance and Movement Culture at the German Sport University Cologne, Germany. She studied sports science with a focus on leisure and creativity studies.

She received her PhD (in Sport Science) at German Sport University Cologne and completed her habilitation-project (aesthetic-cultural education and digitization in movement and dance) at Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz. In 2012, her dissertation was awarded the Young Scientist Award in the category "Humanities and Social Sciences" (GSU).

She received teaching awards at the German Sport University Cologne for an innovative teaching concept in the category "practical courses and exercises" in 2010 and was awarded for a digital innovative teaching concept "New Ways in Teaching" by the University of Mainz in 2018. She was also nominated for the Teaching Award Rhineland-Palatinate 2018 (as representative of the Department of Social Sciences, Media and Sports), which is awarded by the Ministry of Science, Further Education and Culture to lecturers with excellent teaching performances.

Her research is focused on empirical research in dance education, developing domain-specific research instruments in dance, classroom research and the consequences of digitization in the field of arts education and movement. She has received several highly competitive external funding from research councils (e.g., Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Foundations (Crespo and Mercator) and Counsel for Cultural Education). She collaborates nationally and internationally with researchers from interdisciplinary fields such as communication design, computer science, body sociology, kinesiology studies, physical education and dance science.
