Abstract
Summary: Burnout often occurs as a result of work stress in teachers. In stress and burnout research, physical activity is often described as a resource strengthening and stress reducing factor. In addition the association between burnout symptoms and a lack of need satisfaction as described in self determination theory, is well documented. In the current study, relationships between professional psychological need satisfaction, leisure time physical activity and burnout were investigated. The survey of 80 teachers shows negative correlations between physical activity and emotional exhaustion. In addition the interaction between the satisfaction of relatedness and the perceived physical activity proved to be a significant predictor in a regression analysis for burnout. A positive physical activitiy self may distract from stress inducing events or may compensate them by positive emotions.
