Abstract

Objectives
To analyze the efficacy of acupuncture asa complementary therapy to the 12-weeks
training program of osteoarthritis of the knee, with respect to pain relief, reduction of
stiffness and increased physical function during treatment; changes in the patient’s quality of life.
Methods
Fifty-one patients aged 50-75 years were randomized. The research was carried out
at the rehabilitation centre of Heilig-Geist-Hospital over a period of two years. The patients were divided into three groups: a control group received only a 12-weeks training program (group 1, n=16) and the in
tervention groups (group 2, n=20; group 3 n=15) were treated with acupuncture plus a 12-weeks training program. The differ-
ence between group 2 and group 3 is: acupuncture was carried out from week 1 to 5
in the training program in group 2 and week 7 to 11 in the training program in group 3.
The clinical variable examined included walking tests on a treadmill, isokinetic muscle
testing, electromyograph, pain, stiffness and physical function subscales of the
Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) osteoarthritis index and the
MOS (Medical Outcomes Study) 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Four
assessments were made as follows: A: week 1 (first baseline); B: week 6 (end of the
6-weeks training); C: week 12 (end of the 12-weeks training); D: week 24 (12 weeks
after the end of the 12-weeks training, only questionnaire).
Results
The SF-36 presented a greater pain reduction in the intervention group 2 and group 3
than in the control group. The pain reduction appeared sooner in group 2 than in group 3. The 12-weeks training program produces significant changes in aerobic ca-pacity, isokinetic strength, neuromuscular control and physical function of WOMAC.
Conclusions
Acupuncture plus a 12-weeks training program is more effective than only a 12-weeks training program for pain reduction in
SF-36 of osteoarthritis of the knee. Acu-puncture plus a 12-weeks training program is not more effective than only a 12-weeks training program for aerobic capacity, muscle strength and neuromuscular control of osteoarth
ritis of the knee.
