Abstract

This chapter assesses the situation of LGBTQ athletes in sports in Germany and the policy of inclusion of LGBTQ people in organised sports. First, it presents findings from Outsport, the first European research study on the experiences of LGBTQ people in sports in EU countries, focusing specifically on the German survey sample (n = 858) and interviews with gender and diversity commissioners in sports federations. Against this background, the sports system in Germany and the missionary corporatist configuration of its policy framework are outlined in order to place the LGBTQ anti-discrimination policies of organised sports in the frame of the sports system. Finally, the chapter focuses on the development of queer sports clubs and outlines the relevance of intersectoral cooperation for further inclusion policies in organised sports in Germany.
