For Germany the demographic change means that there will be more and more older people, but also fewer and fewer young people who can look after the elderly. In the future, the necessary personnel and the corresponding health and medical costs will be an exorbitant challenge for the German society. Therefore sport will be able to play a much larger role in society and for the individual in the future.
Since demographic change is a challenge for society as a whole, the school system must also ask itself what it can contribute to coping with it. This led to the idea of implementing sports gerontology at the Berufskolleg in NRW. The content is about sensitizing and qualifying the students for the topic. A modular system has been developed that enables implementation in all educational areas of the Berufskolleg NRW.
In the six-year research period in 18 schools 1,088 students were taught in seven programs of about a total of 12 variants in the modular system. The aim of the empirical study was to find out if and how the educational offer is accepted, how the concept works and in which area of the vocational colleges a progression can probably be recommended.
The evaluation and discussion of the data showed that a progression of the implementation would be possible in the training of social assistants and gymnastic teachers. Sports gerontology would take too much space in these vocational trainings. For this reason and as the evaluation of the data showed that the two-year vocational school is very well suited for a progression, this became the target of a school pilot project, which was applied for by four vocational colleges from NRW in fall 2017.
The application for a school pilot project was unfortunately rejected on 23.11.2017. Nonetheless, the project will be continued and further developed in many schools.
