Abstract

Research on scandals and scandalization often focuses on case studies. This dissertation goes beyond single cases and analyses structures of reporting on scandals on a boarder basis. It describes all reported scandals in three German newspapers in one year by using news factors and scandal properties as characteristics of the reported incidences. News value theory is used for the depiction of common reporting structures. Results allow a novel view on scandalization in newspapers. The study shows an unexpected high amount of scandals in a wide range of societal fields.
The dissertation contains a second study to give first explanations for the reporting structures of scandalization. Therefor newspaper reporters were asked to evaluate reasons for reporting on scandals.
