Abstract

Social Support can be described as “aid and assistance exchanged through social relationships and interpersonal transactions” (Heaney & Israel, 2008, p. 191). These social relationships and interpersonal interactions have structural and functional aspects. Structural aspects relate strictly to characteristics of the social network (i.e., quantity and type of relationships and interactions) without making reference to the literal provision of support. In this respect, social support is the functional content of relationships and interactions within one’s social network.
