Abstract

The fitness sector encloses meanwhile a sales volume of more than 3 billion euros and occupies about 100,000 people. The line of business has nevertheless received hardly attention scientifically till now. This concerns in particular the branch of so-called„ multifunctional sports and leisure centres“ which constantly gained over the last 10 years significance. The range of the multifunctional sports and leisure centres requires with regard to the number of employees, the sales dimension as well as the dynamics of the market for a professional management. In this context the subject "strategic business planning" plays a vitally important role. However, up to now there is here hardly cognition about how this market works professionally and how it is planned and led strategically. The present work would like to repair this deficit and therefore occupies itself with this market very in detail. On this occasion, are lighted up among other things also the strategical factors of influence, the used planning instruments, the trends of this branch as well as the chances and risks of the branch. Base of the analysis is a comprehensive empiric study at a variety of "multifunctional sports and leisure centres" in Germany which is carried out 1997 by the author. Then with the help of another comparative study in 2008 the "survival rate" of the multifunctional sports and leisure centres about the last 10 years could be indicated and be appraised. The result is sobering, almost quite shocking. Nearly 38% of the centres examined in 1997 did not survived the last 10 years. Further 33% could protect their survival ability only by the fact that they have carried out bigger changes in their offer and mostly also of architectural kind. Clearly recognizably became, on this occasion, a „strategical planning gap“. Since obviously just those centres which have pursued a foresighted strategic planning have survived. Because such a professional strategic planning is pursued only by few multifunctional sports and leisure centres, such a “high death rate” is also not surprising. This is all the more amazing, as that there are a number of easy and useful planning instruments from the classical science of business management which would be also usable for this line of business. Also this could indicate the present work on the basis of examples.
